Thankful

This month as part of the Compassion Blog assignment we were asked to pick one word for the upcoming year. I have selected "thankful" as my word. I am thankful for so much in life! I am thankful to God every day for being alive, healthy, safe, and loved by him. I am thankful for my Compassion kids. I love getting letters and kind words from them, and I love being able to write to them as well. They are my "kids" since we don't have any ourselves yet. I love them to pieces and am thankful to be a part of Compassion International in this way. I am thankful for my husband. He works hard for our family and is a very devoted church going guy. He's great. I am thankful for my family (parents, brother, in-laws, etc.). They are all great too and I can't imagine life without them. I am thankful for our house and neighbors. We live in a great family friendly area with neighbors who go out of their way to plow for me, have us over for supper, etc. They are wonderful. I am thankful for my job (and my husbands). Although I don't always like my job (or aspects of it), I am thankful for the paycheck that allows us to travel, support our Compassion kids, afford our house, etc. This coming year I will try to remain thankful, as it is easy to forget all the good things we have to be thankful for when one bad thing happens. We need to have joy through the bad times, as Jesus taught us.

One Meal One Day

I’m skipping a meal on November 6th and invite you to skip it with me! It’s all part of an event called One Meal One Day – a nationwide initiative of Compassion International to help meet the urgent nutritional needs of children in extreme poverty. The idea is to skip one meal and then donate the money that you would have spent on that meal to Compassion.
I am also fundraising, with a goal to raise $100 before November 6th.  All donations will help children registered in Compassion’s programs whose extraordinary needs exceed the capacity of Compassion’s regular activities.

Please, join me in participating in One Meal One Day. Anyone can help raise awareness and fundraise – even if they choose not to skip the meal. To make a donation, make checks payable to “Compassion International” with “OMOD” in the memo line and mail them to me (email me at ca85@yahoo.com for my address).  Otherwise you can give on the online fundraising site (link listed below).  If you would like more information about One Meal One Day, feel free to contact me or visit onemealoneday.org.
Also as an added incentive, I'm going to do a contest for all those who donate on my online fundraising site (see the link above) or that send me a check for this.  I'll put names in a hat and do a drawing for your choice of a handmade scarf, a bracelet, or a necklace (I can text pictures to whomever wins to make the choice from).  So far I only have one entrant so your chances are pretty good.  Help make this a competition by donating today.
Thanks!

Bubblews

Yesterday while on Facebook I noticed someone talking about a blog site that you could post your thoughts to that also paid you money for all views, likes, comments, etc.  I figured why not try it, since then I could earn more money to use towards my child sponsorships.  Unfortunately with the site you aren't supposed to put links to other websites (such as Compassion or my referral links to sponsor a child), so I'll still be posting all that here when I have time, but I figured why not use another form of writing to earn money.

You have to earn $25 before you can cash out, but yesterday alone with one tiny article I got $1.17.  I wrote two articles today and only have another 20 cents so far but maybe people aren't viewing their site until later tonight.  Either way, I figure if I can start getting a following or views and make at least a buck a day, that would be great!  A better goal yet would be to earn at least $38 a month since that would pay for the sponsorship of one of my Compassion kids (or to use as a backup in case one of my 6 correspondence kids gets dropped by their sponsor since I'd never be able to say goodbye).  Otherwise family gifts.

So, if you want to check out my site to view it, that would be great!

Blog Month.....I won!

Last month I participated in blog month with Compassion.  Of all the bloggers that wrote and entered, I was lucky enough to be one of the 5 winners selected....all thanks to YOU!

To win, I needed to write blog posts (check!), as well as get at least one child sponsored through my blog.  Apparently one of my wonderful readers sponsored a child through my site, so I want to send a big thank you to whomever you are.  Not only are you helping a child in need (really the most important thing) but it also helped me become eligible for the drawing in which I was then drawn to win some prizes.

Thanks again to all my readers and to that special person out there who sponsored a child through my site.  If you want to let me know who you are, I'd love to learn which child touched your heart (if not, I totally understand too).

Have a great weekend everyone.

One Meal One Day

This year I will be participating in the One Meal One Day fundraiser with Compassion International, where on November 6, you pledge to skip a meal and donate the money you would have spent on that meal to this great cause.  The money goes to help children in poverty receive the much needed nutrition they lack.

To give, you can either send a check to me (made out to Compassion International.....just message me for my address), or you can donate online at this fundraising page:  http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/KatieChurchill/fall2013

Any help would be awesome!

Dignity

This week our Compassion Blog Month assignment was to write about what we feel the following sentence means to us:

The presence of dignity doesn't mean poverty is absent.

To me, this has a lot to do with Compassion International.  Just because someone is poor, doesn't mean they lack dignity.  They may work long hard hours to provide for their family, which gives them dignity in their hard work, yet with low wages, they may remain below the poverty line.

This is also shown in the pictures of sponsored children with Compassion.  Even though their family is poor, they might have one good outfit (or borrow one) that they meticulously keep clean for church and pictures.  They wear that outfit for picture day in order to try to impress a sponsor.  Some people might look at that child and think "they don't look poor, why do they need help?" but in reality they are poor, just with a lot of dignity in how they present themselves.  They take pride in keeping their appearance as clean as they can.

Below is a children who needs a sponsor who did just this.  They present themselves with such dignity and presence, yet are obviously below the poverty line to need the help of Compassion International.  Please consider sponsoring her today.

Fidele Afi Alokpo

She is 4 years old and was born on April 24, 2009.  She lives in Togo and has been waiting 326 days for a sponsor (you would probably be her first!).  There are 3 children in her family and she lives with both of her parents, who are sometimes farmers.  Just look at that cute yellow dress that she is showing off in.  Such a sweet girl.

Love

This weeks blog topic is about choosing one word.  Yesterday I chose Hope.

Today I'm chosing Love.....by advocating for some kids named Love!

Love comes in many forms.  Showing my sponsored kids love is easy and so rewarding.  I show them love by writing to them several times a month.  I encourage them and tell them they are special.

Love also comes from our faith in God.  He showers us with more love than we deserve!  I am so glad we have a merciful God who gave his only son to save us.

Love is a word I use for my family and friends.  My Compassion kids are definitely a part of our family and I wouldn't bat an eye in considering them my children.  To some we are "auntie and uncle", which is so sweet.

The two kids below are named Love and My-love......which I think is just darling.  they are both beautiful little girls.

Please consider sponsoring a child in need today!

Love

This cutie is named Love and she is from the Dominican Republic.  She is 8 years old and her birthday is on April 21, 2005.  She lives with her parents and there are 3 kids in the family.  She has been waiting 194 days for a sponsor so please consider loving Love by sponsoring her today!

My-love

This little cutie is named My-love and she is from Haiti.  She is 7 years old and her birthday was on March 3, 2006.  She lives with just her father, who is sometimes employed as a farmer.

Three Things About One Word: Hope

This weeks blog month assignment is to write three things about one word.  The word I chose was:

HOPE

Hope can come in many forms.  Through Compassion International, the sponsored children learn about and have hope for their future!

First and foremost, the children can learn hope in Jesus!  Through the Compassion projects, the children attend Sunday school, church, and learn about the word of God.  This can give them a hope for their future by putting their faith in God.  They have hope through prayer, uplifting and encouraging verses, communion with other believers, and a joy in the Lord.  This is something we can all connect with each other over as well, which is a great common ground when writing the kids letters.

Second, with an education they can have hope for a job, hope for a better life, hope for a change in circumstance.  Without Compassion International, some of the sponsored kids would not be able to attend school or afford the basics like school tuition, books, uniforms, etc.  Through this hope, their world can change!  We are so fortunate here in the US with free education, but in other parts of the world, there is no such thing as a free education, which is sad.

Third, they can have hope in a relationship with us, their sponsor!  My sponsored and correspondence children all have the hope that we will send them letters of encouragement, to lift them up.  I love getting a letter in my mailbox from them, and I know they feel the same way.  They have said the sweetest words regarding how much letters mean to them, even short letters.  Never underestimate how valuable hope through caring words can be!  My kids have a hope that we will someday visit them (I sure hope I can!), but more than anything, they just hope for a loving relationship and friendship.  Please give them that relationship if you already sponsor, and if you are not currently sponsoring a child, please give hope to a child awaiting a sponsor today!

Please click on the below link to see children in need of a sponsor.  Give them HOPE for a bright future today.

A Conversation With My Childhood Self

This weeks Compassion International Blog Month's assignment is to write a note to our childhood self to think of ways we could have encouraged ourselves when we were younger.

Thinking back to my childhood I had a lot of great people around me who did encourage me.  There were of course a handful of classmates or others who would pick on me because of my acne and the mole I had on my face (since removed by plastic surgery).  I always felt self conscious of my face since a very early age.  I knew my parents, friends, and family loved me (and of course God too!), but it still bothered me that I had to deal with acne and the jokes from others.  Other kids can be cruel (and adults too sadly).

Now, years later, looking back on it, I wish I could have told myself that it would get better, that my face would clear up, that surgery to remove my mole would happen, that I would eventually get married, etc.  At the time I wasn't so sure any of those would happen, but now looking back I know I should have prayed more about it, accepted how I looked, and have confidence in my personality to shine through.

I know as a child, it would have helped to hear all of this, or to hear encouraging words instead of insults from classmates.

Because of this, I make sure to tell all my sponsored children with Compassion International just how loved and special I think they are.  I make sure to tell them how pretty/handsome they are, how much I love them, how unique and important they are, and how much God loves them.  I hope my words of encouragement mean as much to them in their young lives as I know it would have meant to me to hear it growing up.  For those of you that do sponsor a child, please make sure to write them often and encourage them in their schooling and life.  Even if you don't think you have anything exciting to write to them, they love just hearing about your day, or the fact that you are thinking of them.  A short letter to say hi is always appreciated, as it makes them feel special getting mail on mail day at their project.

I had a great family and childhood growing up, but my appearance definitely made me shy/self-conscious until it cleared up.  My sponsored children may not be going through physical appearance struggles (I hope!), but I'm sure they have their own struggles with family finances, missing parents, struggling in school, worrying about their futures, etc.  I pray that they won't have to worry about any of those, and through Compassion International and the child sponsorship program they can get their needs met to overcome those obstacles.

I want you to consider sponsoring a child today.  There are a lot of kids on the Compassion site that still need sponsors so feel free to click on the link below to pick any child that jumps out at you.

Click here to sponsor a child today!

I have also found a few children on the site that I would like to advocate for from Rwanda who have been waiting to receive a sponsor for over a year now!  These children could use all the love and support that you can offer to them through your monthly financial help as well as your precious letters that you send them.  My kids from Rwanda write great letters and are so thankful to hear from me, that it always brings a smile to my face to read their letters.

Uwimbabazi Dianne

Her birthday is November 2, 2006 (so she is 6....soon to be 7).  She lives with her parents who are sometimes employed as farmers.  There are 5 children in the family.

Irambona Gaudance

Her birthday is July 30, 2006.  She just turned 7 a month ago and has been waiting over a year for a sponsor.  She lives with her mother and there are 4 kids in the family.

Ndayishimiye David

His birthday is November 18, 2005.  He is 7, almost 8 years old.  He lives with his parents and helps carry firewood and water.  There are five kids in his family.

Please consider sponsoring one of these 3 children to put a smile on their faces :)  Otherwise, please feel free to look through the Compassion site to find a child with a certain birthday, name, from a certain country, etc.  There are so many ways to search for a child that I encourage you to explore the Compassion page today.

Compassion International Blog Month!

Kids from Rwanda that need sponsors (with the name Jean or Jeannette)

Sorry I haven't written in a long time!  The summer gets so busy.

To have something new to post, I looked through the kids still awaiting sponsors on the Compassion.com site, and here are a few that jumped out at me from Rwanda, with similar names (trying to do a theme here).

Update:  Looks like Jean Pierre might have found a sponsor!  Awesome.
This is little Jean Pierre from Rwanda

He is 10, almost 11 (his birthday is August 24, 2002).  He has been waiting 408 days for a sponsor so it would be awesome if he found a sponsor by his birthday in two weeks.  He lives with his mother and loves soccer, marbles, and rolling a hoop.

Here is the link to go to see his profile:
http://www.compassion.com/sponsor_a_child/child-video-biography.htm?needKey=RW6380282

UPDATE:  Jeanette might be sponsored too!  Wonderful news for her.
Another cutie from Rwanda.....Jeanette

She is 7 but her birthday is tomorrow, so she will soon be 8.  She has been waiting 345 days for a sponsor, so please grant her a birthday wish and sponsor her :)  Her birthday is August 13, 2005.  She is from Rwanda, lives at home with her parents and there are 5 kids in her family.  She loves playing games and she is above average in school!

To sponsor her, please click on this link:

http://www.compassion.com/sponsor_a_child/child-video-biography.htm?needKey=RW7710107

Or if you'd prefer to sponsor an older child, this young lady (named Jeannette also) is waiting for a sponsor:

She is 17 and her birthday is February 28, 1996.  She lives with her mother and there are 5 kids in the family.  She is from Rwanda also.  She is doing well in high school and enjoys jumping rope.

To sponsor her, please click on this link:

I sponsor two girls from Rwanda, so I can tell you that you will be very blessed to sponsor here.  They are such sweet kids (as they all are of course).

Sponsor found for Jackline!

While helping at a Compassion booth at the Joyful Noise concert on Saturday, June 8th, I found a sponsor for Jackline (whom I was advocating for the past month).  I am so excited that she will have a new sponsor to write to her for years to come.  Plus, it was officially my first child that got sponsored whom I advocated for.  Exciting :)

On another good note, as a group we got 121 children sponsored at the concert.  Praise God!

New Kids I'm Advocating For...

I recently requested four packets to advocate for some more kids for Compassion International (I requested countries that I have kids in so that hopefully when sharing with friends/family I can connect with them that way too).  Please let me know if any of these kids tug at your heart and I can get you signed up with them.  Please feel free to share these with others too.  Thanks so much!

Here they are:

Muhoza

14 year old boy from Rwanda.  His birthday is April 2, 1999.  His child ID # is RW-636-0291.  He lives with his mother and there are 6 kids in the family so I'm sure they could use some help!  His shoes look very dirty/old in the packet picture.

Jineesh

This is a 3.5 year old little cutie from India.  His birthday is October 9, 2009.  His ID # is IN-774-0189.  He lives with his father and mother and there are two kids in the house. It says he is in kindergarten (seems young so maybe they mean preschool?) and he likes playing with friends.

Jackline

She is 10 years old (11 soon!) from Tanzania.  Her birthday is June 28, 2002 and her child ID # is TZ-952-0084.  She lives at home with her mother and there are two kids in the family.  She likes playing house, art, and dolls.  She has a beautiful dress on (hard to tell from these small head shot type pictures I find online here).

Juana

She is a 9 (almost 10) year old beauty from Peru.  Her birthday is August 27, 2003 and her child ID # is PE-546-0150.  She lives with her father and mother and there are two kids in the family.  She likes playing house and dolls.

Please pray that I can find sponsors for these children.  Let me know you need more info on any of them.  Please either message me on here, or send me an email to ca85@yahoo.com if you would like to sponsor them.  Thanks!

Happy May 1st!

Time flies!  I can't believe its May 1st already...especially with the weather we've been having here in MN.  Snow, more snow, two warm days, and now rain/snow again today.  I can't wait for the real spring to start!

I wanted to remind people to check out my Etsy shop and to use the code:  Churchill10 to receive 10% off your order.  I posted a few more burp rags/bibs as well as a cool new scarf design, plus lowered the prices on a few things too so this will be a really good deal for you!

Here is the link again:

My Etsy Shop

My Compassion International Updates:

As of last month I had 2 sponsored kids, and 8 correspondence kids.  Then the first week of April I got a call from Compassion saying that the sponsors of our correspondence girl named Flor had dropped her sponsorship.  We had the option of picking up her sponsorship or letting someone else pick her up.  After praying and thinking about it, we decided to pick up her sponsorship to continue to be able to write to her (we've yet to get a letter back, but fingers crossed it will be soon!).  So that now brings our numbers to 3 sponsored kids and 7 correspondence kids.

We love them all so much.

Etsy

Just as a reminder, I am trying to sell some crafts on Etsy to help with my Compassion International sponsorships, birthday gifts for the kids, etc.

If you want a certain color or fabric, let me know and I'll try to find it.

Right now I have a variety of burp rags and bibs for sale in lots of cute fabric.  I also crochet some ruffle scarves, and can make these in more colors too.

Feel free to message me on Etsy with any specific requests or if you'd like to make an offer on anything (or for more than one purchase) let me know since I'd be happy to negotiate too.  Thanks again.

New Pictures of Tuyizere

I am so excited.  Last night I received pictures of Tuyizere and her family.  Laurent was able to visit her and bring her a letter and pictures of my husband and I to her, and most importantly let her know that she has been sponsored by us and will receive lots of letters in the years to come.

Here are some beautiful pictures he took for us:

That is her sister and mom in the pictures as well (they are holding the pictures we sent them).  Tuyizere is 5 (but will be 6 on April 1st).  Her smile melts my heart and I love her to pieces.

While Laurent was there, he found out that Tuyizere's dad has malaria.  Please pray for her dad so that he is healed.

This family is a believing family and even has a bible verse written on the outside of their house.  I am so excited to get to know Tuyizere.

If you haven't already done so, please check out my Etsy page at:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/ChurchillCrafts
I have added a few new items and would love to get some sales coming in so that I can use the money towards a family gift for this wonderful family.  Thanks!

My newest sponsored child!

I wanted to introduce you all to my newest sponsored child...Tuyizere.  She is a cutie from Rwanda who is 5 now, but will be 6 on April 1st.

My birthday was last week and that day I felt a strong pull to sponsor a new child.  I found sweet little Tuyizere along with some other kids that pulled at my heart so I thought about it overnight.  The next day I decided that Tuyizere was the perfect little girl to add to my Compassion family.

Isn't she a cutie!

I've already sent her an online letter, birthday money, and have a letter, coloring sheets, picture, stickers, puzzle, and birthday card ready to be mailed tomorrow (when the post office is open again).  I hope this young girl knows how much she is loved!

The neat thing is that Laurent (a former sponsored child with Compassion) will be visiting her sometime soon and will be able to tell her in person that she received a sponsor and he will try to take more pictures of her, so I'm pretty excited that I might get to see more pictures soon.

Please pray for this little girl and her family.

Also, please check out my Etsy shop at:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/ChurchillCrafts

I have various burp rags and ruffle scarves for sale, and the money raised will be used to help sponsor this little girl, as well as for birthday and family gifts for my correspondence kids as well.  Let me know if you have a special color request for either the scarves or burp rags and I'd be happy to help (or buy several and I can give you a discount on price and/or shipping).  Thanks!

Updated photo of Zymvra!

We became the correspondence sponsors to 12 year old Zymvra on December 26, 2012.  He is from the Philippines.  In January we received a letter from him (addressed to his financial sponsors and written before we were even assigned to him) so we know he writes in English, and seems like he'll be a good little writer.

Here is the picture that showed up when we first got him:

Now today when I went on our account, I saw what looked like a new guy....but it was just Zymvra's photo update!

Below is his new picture, showing him to look more like a 12 (almost 13) year old!

He's definitely growing up and looks like he maybe grew a little taller too.  He's a cutie and I can't wait to hear from him some more (since I know I have another letter from him on the way....not sure if this one is directed at his previous sponsors or us though, so we'll find out!).

Patiently Waiting (trying to anyways...)

Still patiently waiting for letters to come from our Compassion International kids.  I called and know 3 letters have been written and are on their way, so its just a matter of time.  It takes time for them to get translated, back to the US office, and then mailed to me, so I have to pray for patience, but it's hard!  I haven't heard from some of them in awhile so I get anxious to learn more.  I keep writing to them several times a month though, so they should always receive a steady stream of letters to feel special.

For those of you out there that sponsor, please make sure to keep writing letters to let your special kids know how much they are loved, regardless of how often they write back to you.

Kids I am Advocating for...

I am a new advocate and just got the advocate box in the mail with my first two packets (saw it on the doorstop this morning).

The first child I am advocating for is:

Kalkidan Ejara.

Her birthday is October 8, 2006 and she is from Ethiopia.
She is a beautiful girl with a big smile on her face (makes me melt)..  She is wearing a pink sweatshirt and shoes and gray pants.  She is from an AIDS-infected area/country.  She lives with her father and mother.  Her dad is not employed and her mother is sometimes employed as a laborer.  She does errands and cleaning, and loves to play house, play dolls, hide-and-seek, etc.  She is in primary school and her performance is average..  Her ID # is ET-112-0475.  Her child center is Asko Kalehiwot Student Center.

The second child is:

Brian Alexander Cisneros Lopez

His birthday is April 26, 2000 and he lives in El Salvador.
He is a Priority child, as he has been waiting over 7 months for a sponsor.  He lives with his parents, and his dad is sometimes employed as a farmer, and his mother maintains the house.  There are 3 children in the family.  Brian helps make beds, run errands, and cleans.  He enjoys soccer, bicycling, and playing group games.  It says his performance is above average in school so that is great!  He is a cute young man.  His ID # is ES-821-0076 and his center is:  Liberacion Integral Student Center.

If you would like to sponsor either of these children, please let me know so I can get you signed up and the packet in the mail to you.  Please leave a comment on here and I'll get back to you.

Thanks so much!  I will continue to pray that I can find these two sweet children sponsors.  Please pray for them as well.

I am a new Advocate!

After already promoting Compassion International on here, Facebook, the OurCompassion Forum, as well as at a few Compassion Intl. tables at concerts, I finally took the next step and became an official advocate.  I filled out the form, did the advocate training phone call, and received my advocate number and link.  Now I am just waiting on the kit that they will be sending me in the mail in the next month, but until then I will keep spreading the word.

If you have any questions about becoming a sponsor with Compassion International, feel free to comment and I will get back to you.  Otherwise you can go to Compassion.com to learn more as well.

If you know you want to sponsor a child, please click on my link below (or copy and paste it), and it will take you to the spot to see the info and pictures for kids who are awaiting sponsors.  You can search by country, age, gender, birth date, and so much more.  There is definitely a kid out there that will melt your heart (they all do for me!).

I pray that you consider sponsoring a child to help change their life.  You can write to the child and you will receive letters back from them.  Over time you will build a relationship with them that will be a bond for a lifetime.

Please click on the link below :)
